Language in Croatia

Croatian, called hrvatski or hrvatski jezik, is the official language of Croatia. It is used in administration, education, national media, and most everyday communication. Croatian uses the Latin alphabet with several additional letters and signs. Spelling is closely connected to pronunciation, so learning the sound of each letter provides a strong beginning. Nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and some numbers change form according to their role in a sentence. These case endings can seem difficult, but common phrases can be learned before the complete grammar system. Verbs express person and number, and they also distinguish different ways of viewing an action. Learners make useful progress by mastering frequent present, past, and future patterns step by step. Standard Croatian provides a shared public form, but everyday speech varies. Čakavian, Kajkavian, and Štokavian traditions contain many local varieties and are important to regional identity. Croatian is closely related to Bosnian, Montenegrin, and Serbian, and speakers can often understand one another. The languages still have their own standards, preferred words, scripts, and identities, so their names should be respected. Croatia also has recognized minority languages and communities. Depending on the region, residents may encounter Serbian, Italian, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Romani, and other languages. Many people speak or understand foreign languages, particularly in tourism and larger cities. This is helpful, but it does not remove the value of learning basic Croatian. Language skills improve through repeated listening, speaking, reading, and correction. Mistakes are a normal part of learning and are usually less limiting than refusing to try.
