Professions in Cuba

A profession is a recognized field of skilled work, while an oficio is often a practical trade or craft. Everyday language may overlap, so the real qualification and authorization requirements matter more than the label. University-trained professions include fields such as medicine, teaching, engineering, science, law, and other specialized work. These paths normally require recognized study and may involve additional rules before independent practice. Technical and vocational occupations support construction, mechanics, electricity, transport, communications, manufacturing, hospitality, and other services. Training may combine classroom learning with supervised practical experience. Public-service professions often connect education with placement and institutional staffing needs. A graduate may begin in an assigned or available role rather than freely choosing every workplace and location. Some occupations are regulated because mistakes could harm people, property, or public interests. A diploma alone may not be enough if professional recognition, registration, health clearance, or institutional authorization is also required. Practical trades can be learned through vocational education, workplace experience, family knowledge, or supervised practice. Formal evidence of skill improves access to safer and more reliable work. Self-employment and private businesses can create opportunities for crafts, repairs, food services, design, technology, transport-related services, and other permitted work. The activity must fit an authorized legal form and any sector rules. A qualification obtained abroad may need Cuban recognition before it can support employment or regulated practice. Translation or authentication may also be required, depending on the document and purpose. Choosing a profession should combine interest with reality. Consider local demand, length of training, transport, physical demands, access to tools, possible workplaces, and whether the skill can grow into different roles.
