History in Cyprus

Cyprus has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its early communities developed farming, trade and crafts, and the island became known in the ancient Mediterranean for copper and its strategic location. Ancient Cyprus contained several kingdoms and interacted with Greek, Phoenician and neighbouring cultures. It later came under the influence or rule of larger powers, including the Ptolemies and Romans. Christianity became deeply established during late antiquity and Byzantine rule. Churches, monasteries, mosaics and local traditions still show this long religious and cultural history. Medieval Cyprus was ruled by the Lusignan dynasty and then Venice. Castles, city walls and Gothic buildings reveal connections with crusader states and western Mediterranean powers. The Ottoman Empire took control in the sixteenth century and governed Cyprus for several centuries. This period shaped land, administration, religious communities and the development of the Turkish Cypriot population. Britain later administered Cyprus and eventually made it a colony. British influence remains visible in parts of government, education, law, road use and the built environment. The Republic of Cyprus became independent in 1960 through arrangements involving Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Constitutional tensions, violence and separation damaged trust and displaced people. A Greek-backed coup and Turkey’s military intervention in 1974 led to further displacement and the island’s lasting division. The Republic of Cyprus controls the south, while the north is administered separately; a United Nations buffer zone runs between them, and the political status remains sensitive. History in Cyprus lives in family memories, missing places, monuments and competing narratives. A sound overview distinguishes established events from interpretation and gives space to the experiences of different communities.
