Labor law in Cyprus

Labor law in Cyprus combines national rules, European Union standards, employment contracts, and collective arrangements. The exact rights and duties depend partly on whether a person is truly an employee rather than genuinely self-employed. An employment contract explains the work, pay, hours, workplace, duration, and other agreed conditions. Important terms should be recorded in writing so that both sides can understand and prove them. Employers must pay agreed remuneration and provide lawful working conditions. Employees must perform their work with reasonable care, follow lawful instructions, and respect legitimate duties such as confidentiality. Rules on working time, rest, leave, family-related protection, equality, and workplace safety set minimum safeguards. A contract can often provide better conditions, but it generally cannot remove mandatory protections. Cyprus also has social insurance and payroll obligations connected with employment. Employers and workers should ensure that the relationship and payments are properly recorded with the relevant authorities.
