Employment in Czechia

Employment is called zaměstnání, and a standard employment relationship is a pracovní poměr. It is normally created through a written pracovní smlouva between an employer and an employee. The contract identifies the kind of work, place of work, and starting date. Pay, working time, duration, benefits, and a possible trial period may appear in the contract or related documents. Employment may be open-ended or agreed for a limited period. A limited contract ends under its agreed terms, while an open-ended relationship continues until it is lawfully ended. Czechia also has agreements known as dohoda o provedení práce, or DPP, and dohoda o pracovní činnosti, or DPČ. They are used for work outside a standard employment relationship and have their own practical consequences. The employer organizes work, provides suitable conditions, pays wages, keeps required records, and manages payroll duties. The employee performs the agreed work, follows lawful instructions, protects workplace property, and observes safety rules. Employees generally have rules covering working time, rest, leave, sickness, parenthood, equal treatment, and workplace safety. The exact application depends on the employment form and situation. Employment can end by agreement, notice, expiry of a fixed term, or other legally recognized means. Written documents and correct procedure are important because the reason and timing affect both sides. A collective agreement may apply where workers are represented by a trade union. It can improve or clarify conditions such as pay, benefits, working schedules, and workplace procedures.
