Apprenticeship in Denmark

Apprenticeship in Denmark belongs mainly to the vocational education and training system. The Danish term “erhvervsuddannelse” is commonly shortened to EUD, while an apprenticeship or training placement may be called a “læreplads.” The system uses alternating learning. Students spend periods at a vocational school and periods learning practical tasks in a company or another approved training setting. Vocational programs cover many fields, including crafts, technology, transport, commerce, services, food, care, and agriculture. The exact structure differs by occupation because each trade requires different skills and practical experience. A learner normally begins with a school-based foundation stage suited to their background and chosen field. The later main stage focuses more closely on the occupation and usually includes workplace training. Finding a suitable training placement is an important part of many routes. Applicants commonly contact employers, prepare an application, attend interviews, and show that they understand the occupation and can work reliably with others. During workplace periods, the learner is expected to follow schedules, safety rules, professional standards, and instructions. The school and workplace have different roles, but both contribute to the learner’s occupational competence. Assessment can include school assignments, practical performance, examinations, and a final trade-related test. Successful completion leads to a vocational qualification for the relevant occupation rather than a general school certificate alone. Some vocational pathways combine vocational training with stronger upper secondary academic elements. These routes can support both entry into skilled work and access to certain forms of further education. Apprenticeship offers real work experience, occupational contacts, and a clear route into a trade. Challenges can include securing a placement, meeting language or academic requirements, adjusting to workplace culture, and confirming how previous foreign education fits the Danish route.
