Religion in Denmark

Christianity has strongly influenced Denmark’s calendar, buildings, ceremonies, education, and historical institutions. Modern Danish society is also religiously diverse and includes many people who are secular or non-religious. Folkekirken is the established Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark. It has local parishes and provides worship, pastoral care, and ceremonies such as baptism, confirmation, weddings, and funerals for its members. Membership, belief, and active participation are not the same thing. A person may belong for family or cultural reasons, attend rarely, hold strong faith, or choose no religious affiliation. Other Christian traditions include Catholic, Orthodox, free-church, and international congregations. Their worship, leadership, languages, and organization may differ from Folkekirken. Muslim communities in Denmark are diverse in origin, practice, language, and interpretation. Mosques and associations may support prayer, education, charity, celebrations, and social life. Jewish life has a long history in Denmark, while Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and other religious communities add further traditions. Migration and international connections continue to shape religious life. Freedom of religion protects personal belief and religious practice within the general legal order. It also includes freedom to change religion, criticize religion, or live without religious belief. Religion can become visible through food, clothing, holidays, prayer, family customs, and burial practices. Respectful coexistence requires room for difference while recognizing that no individual represents an entire faith.
