Art in North Korea

Art in North Korea is organized mainly through a formal state-controlled system that serves ideological education, public ceremonies, mass mobilization and cultural preservation. Visual art has the strongest local presence, especially Korean painting (Joseonhwa), oil painting, murals, sculpture, craft, embroidery and calligraphy. Music, revolutionary opera, literature, film, performance, architecture and design are also produced through state institutions, while an independent liberal art market and autonomous digital-art scene are not reliably evidenced.
