Food in North Korea

Food in North Korea depends on state distribution, markets, household production and seasonal harvests. Rice and maize provide about 90% of annual crop output, while potatoes, soybeans, millet, sorghum, wheat and barley provide additional food. Access is uneven between rural and urban areas and can become especially difficult from May to August. North Korean cuisine includes preserved foods, kimchi, Pyongyang Raengmyon and regional noodle dishes.
