Language in North Korea

North Korea's public language is Korean, locally called 조선어 or 조선말, and the state-defined standard is 문화어, increasingly referred to as 평양문화어. This standard regulates vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, spelling and spacing in schools, administration, media and public institutions. Hangeul, called 조선글, is the normal script, while Hanja has largely disappeared from ordinary writing.
