Disasters in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is exposed to several natural hazards. The most important broad categories are tropical weather, flooding, landslides, earthquakes, coastal effects, drought, and fires. Hurricanes and tropical storms are commonly called huracanes and tormentas tropicales. They can bring destructive wind, intense rain, flooding, dangerous sea conditions, fallen trees, damaged buildings, and long interruptions to electricity or water. Flooding, or inundación, can develop near rivers, drainage channels, low ground, and city streets. Water may hide holes, sharp objects, strong currents, sewage, or electrical danger, so walking or driving through it is unsafe. Landslides, known as deslizamientos or derrumbes, are more likely on steep or weakened slopes after heavy rain. Cracks, falling stones, leaning trees, and unusual ground movement are warning signs that require distance and expert attention. Earthquakes, or terremotos and sismos, can occur without useful warning. During shaking, people should protect their head and body, stay away from glass and falling objects, and avoid rushing onto stairs while objects are moving. Disaster management involves national and local authorities, emergency responders, weather services, health services, community groups, and shelters. Instructions may be shared through television, radio, phones, local officials, or trusted community contacts. Prepared households know their hazards, evacuation route, meeting place, and nearest suitable shelter or safer building. They keep water, food that needs little preparation, medicine, lights, batteries, hygiene supplies, copies of documents, and basic tools. Recovery can take longer than the dangerous event itself. Safe water, injury care, sanitation, building checks, emotional support, and contact with relatives become priorities after the immediate threat passes. No plan can guarantee complete protection, and local facilities may be crowded or damaged. Preparing early and following official local directions creates more options than waiting until conditions become severe.
