History in Congo

Archaeological evidence from the Semliki and Ishango area includes Middle and Upper Palaeolithic remains, fishing and hunting tools, and the Ishango bone, generally dated to about 25,000 to 16,000 years before the present. These finds show long-term settlement but do not support the idea of one uniform original population. Later Bantu-speaking expansions, agriculture, metalworking, fishing and trade created varied village, clan, chiefdom and kingdom structures across forest and savanna regions. The Luba, Lunda and Kuba political traditions developed in different areas, while the Kongo Kingdom, established from about the fourteenth century, extended across parts of present-day Angola and western Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its centre, Mbanza Kongo, is now in Angola, so modern provincial borders cannot be projected onto earlier history. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, trade, diplomacy, Christianity, slavery, ivory and rubber connected local societies with Atlantic, central African, eastern African and Swahili-Arab networks. In the nineteenth century, caravan trade and the expansion of Chokwe-, Lunda- and Luba-related power networks changed political and economic relations in several regions. The Berlin Conference of 1884–1885 preceded the Congo Free State under Leopold II from 1885 to 1908. Forced labour, rubber and ivory quotas, hostage-taking and violence supported extraction, while the Force Publique enforced colonial demands. Belgium annexed the territory in 1908 and administered it as the Belgian Congo, expanding mission education, racial regulations, wage labour, plantations, mining and an infrastructure system designed mainly for extraction. Copper production in Katanga was tied to Union Minière du Haut-Katanga, founded in 1906. Urbanisation, church and school education, wage labour, unions and Congolese political movements grew during the late colonial period, but access to education and administration remained highly unequal. Independence came on 30 June 1960 with Joseph Kasa-Vubu as president and Patrice Lumumba as prime minister. A Force Publique mutiny on 5 July, Belgian intervention, the Katanga and South Kasai secessions, and the UN operation ONUC turned independence into a wider political and military crisis. Lumumba was murdered on 17 January 1961. The crisis involved local political interests and international Belgian, United States and Soviet connections, so no single Cold War explanation covers all causes. Joseph-Désiré Mobutu seized power in 1965 and renamed the country Zaire in 1971. His one-party system combined the policy of Authenticité, nationalisation, patronage and repression with growing economic and debt crises. The First Congo War in 1996–1997 brought Laurent-Désiré Kabila and the Democratic Republic of the Congo name back into use. The Second Congo War from 1998 to 2003 involved neighbouring states, the RCD, the MLC and other armed groups. The Lusaka process, the Inter-Congolese Dialogue, the 2002–2003 Pretoria agreement and MONUC supported a transition that led to the 2006 multiparty elections. MONUC became MONUSCO in 2010, and a UN Intervention Brigade was created in 2013. Elections followed in 2018, and Félix Tshisekedi took office in 2019. Contemporary history remains regionally different. Armed conflict continues especially in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, where local land, authority, citizenship, security and identity disputes interact with regional intervention and resource economies. M23 has been central again since 2021; on 21 February 2025, the UN Security Council condemned M23 offensives in North and South Kivu and called for an end to external support. Accounts of colonial violence, the slave trade, independence, Lumumba, Mobutu, wars, massacres and displacement vary between national, regional, church, diaspora and international memory communities. Universities, archives, museums, schools, churches, heritage organisations and local researchers preserve different evidence. Access, language, security, research permissions, timing and costs vary by institution and collection. Oral-history work requires source criticism, protection of sensitive testimony and informed consent.
