Politics in Congo

Politics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo combines constitutional government, decentralized public authority and elections. The President, government, Parliament and courts exercise national responsibilities, while provinces and local units have their own duties. Elections determine office holders through different direct and indirect voting procedures.

State

The state order of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is based on the 2006 Constitution and combines a unitary state with decentralization. The President, government, Parliament and independent courts share state responsibilities. Provinces and local units have their own responsibilities, but their reach varies greatly by location, administration, security and infrastructure.

Elections

Elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are organized mainly by the Commission Électorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI), which registers voters, conducts elections, counts ballots and publishes preliminary results. Citizens aged 18 or older who hold Congolese nationality and appear on the voter list can vote in eligible elections. The president is elected directly, while senators and governors are chosen indirectly by provincial deputies.
