Professions in Congo

The French terms métier and profession describe an occupation, while travailleur means worker and agent public means a public-service employee. Agriculture is the largest employment area, and the International Labour Organization reported that about 86% of jobs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were informal in 2025. Only about 5% of the population was covered by social protection, so income security, written contracts and access to workplace protection differ sharply between formal and informal work. Common occupational fields include agriculture, livestock, fishing and forestry; artisanal and industrial mining; construction and skilled trades; commerce, transport and logistics; manufacturing; energy and water; information and communications technology; education; health and care; law; finance; public administration; security; NGOs; media; domestic work and environmental services. Agriculture is often small-scale and subsistence-oriented, while mining, construction, transport and informal trade can involve serious safety, health, income and protection risks. Rural or remote work is common, and conflict or displacement can affect working conditions in particular parts of the east. People enter professions through university, technical and vocational education, formation professionnelle, apprenticeship, on-the-job learning, practical experience or self-employment. A formal pathway may lead to a certificate or diploma and then require an internship, registration or licence. An apprenticeship may end with a certificate of completion or lead directly to practical work. Experience, customers, capital and professional networks often determine advancement in informal work; formal advancement usually follows the rules of the institution or public-service statute. The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Vocational Training, the Ministry of Public Service, specialized ministries, labour inspectors, the Institut national de préparation professionnelle, professional orders and councils, provincial authorities and the Cadastre Minier perform different functions. The Labour Code, Law No. 015/2002, covers matters such as employment contracts, apprenticeship, wages, working time, rest, leave, health and safety, labour inspection, unions and dispute resolution, but enforcement is weaker in informal work. Some professions follow separate statutes, including public service, the judiciary, the army and the police. Regulated professions require additional checks. Medical practice, for example, requires registration with the Ordre des médecins and its national or provincial council, together with the required diploma, certificates and moral standing; disciplinary measures can include temporary or permanent exclusion. An artisanal miner, or exploitant artisanal, must be an adult Congolese national with a valid one-year renewable card, membership in a recognized mining cooperative and authorization to work in an artisanal mining zone. The competent provincial mining authority sets the applicable procedure and fee, while environmental, hygiene and safety rules also apply. Requirements, costs, processing times and practical access depend on the profession, institution, province and status, so a private or foreign qualification is not automatically equivalent everywhere.
