Nature in Ecuador

Nature in Ecuador is commonly described as “naturaleza” and includes living species, landscapes, water, soil, climate, and the relationships among them. It is not limited to remote wilderness, because nature also exists around farms, villages, and cities. The Costa contains beaches, estuaries, mangroves, dry forests, humid forests, rivers, and agricultural plains. These systems support fisheries, farming, coastal protection, wildlife, and recreation. The Sierra is shaped by the Andes, with valleys, volcanoes, high grasslands called “páramos,” mountain forests, lakes, and steep watersheds. Altitude can change temperature, vegetation, and weather over a short distance. The Amazonía, also called the Oriente in everyday speech, contains tropical forests, major rivers, wetlands, and exceptionally rich plant and animal life. It is also home to Indigenous peoples whose territories, knowledge, and livelihoods are closely connected to the forest. The Galápagos Islands have distinctive volcanic landscapes and species that developed in relative isolation. Their ecosystems are especially sensitive to introduced species, disturbance, pollution, and careless movement between islands. Protected nature in Ecuador includes national parks, reserves, marine areas, community-conserved lands, private reserves, and other managed spaces. Rules can differ because some places protect strict habitats while others allow controlled residence, farming, fishing, research, or tourism. Wild animals should remain wild, even when they appear calm or accustomed to people. Feeding, touching, collecting, chasing, buying, or moving wildlife can injure animals, spread disease, and disrupt natural behaviour. Nature also provides practical benefits called ecosystem services, including water storage, pollination, food, fertile soil, climate regulation, and protection from erosion or floods. These benefits can decline when habitats become fragmented, polluted, burned, drained, or overused. Safe nature visits require preparation because Ecuador’s altitude, sun, rain, currents, insects, volcanic terrain, and remote areas can create real risks. Local guidance and site rules are essential parts of responsible access.
