Employment in Egypt

Employment begins when a worker agrees to perform work under an employer's direction in return for wages. The employer may be a private company, public body, nonprofit organization, household, or individual business owner. A written employment contract is the clearest record of the relationship. It normally identifies both parties and describes the role, workplace, pay, schedule, duration, and important conditions. Some employment relationships in Egypt operate informally or rely mainly on spoken agreements. The work may be real, but missing documents can make it harder to prove duties, service, pay, or entitlement to protection. Employment may be ongoing, fixed for a period or project, seasonal, part-time, or connected to a trial stage. The true arrangement depends on how the work is organized, not only on the label used. Pay may be arranged by month, day, shift, task, commission, or another agreed method. Workers should know the amount, calculation method, payment date, and whether deductions or performance conditions apply. Formal employment can involve personnel records, payroll documents, social insurance registration, and evidence of leave or attendance. These records connect the daily job to wider systems of worker protection. An employee usually has duties such as attending work, following lawful instructions, handling property carefully, and respecting workplace rules. The employer is expected to provide agreed pay, a usable workplace, clear direction, and proper employment administration. Changes, disputes, resignation, and termination should be documented. A worker should not sign a blank, unread, incorrect, or backdated document merely because someone says it is routine. Foreign nationals require the correct legal basis to work in Egypt, and residence alone should not be assumed to grant permission. The employer and worker should confirm the required authorization before employment begins.
