Housing in Egypt

Apartments are the main urban housing form in Egypt, while houses are more common in some suburbs, villages, and planned developments. Standards can vary greatly even within one street. Rental homes may be furnished or unfurnished, and the meaning of furnished is not always consistent. Inspect every room, appliance, fixture, window, and piece of furniture before agreeing. A written lease should identify the parties, property, rent, payment method, term, deposit, maintenance duties, and included services. Use qualified local help if any clause or ownership claim is unclear. Many buildings have a doorman or caretaker commonly called a bawab. The bawab may help with deliveries, maintenance contacts, security, and local information, but responsibilities differ. Water, electricity, cooking fuel, internet, lifts, and waste collection require careful checking. Ask how each service is supplied, measured, paid, and restored after a problem. Noise, traffic, shops, schools, worship, construction, and street activity can change by time of day. Visit the area during both daytime and evening before committing. Summer heat makes shade, ventilation, cooling, and electricity reliability important. Upper floors may be hotter, while lower floors may have different privacy, noise, or pest concerns. Housing opportunities include strong neighborhood life and many price and location choices. Common limits are uneven maintenance, unclear verbal arrangements, traffic distance, and barriers for people who need step-free access.
