Pets in Egypt

Cats and dogs are common companion animals in Egypt, alongside birds and other small animals. Attitudes toward animals vary between households, buildings, and neighborhoods. Housing rules and landlord expectations matter. Before moving in, confirm that the animal is accepted and that the building offers safe access, ventilation, and enough space. Heat is a major welfare concern. Pets need shade, water, cooler exercise times, and protection from hot pavement and enclosed vehicles. Veterinary services are easiest to find in larger urban areas. A regular veterinarian can guide vaccination, parasite control, identification, sterilization, diet, and emergency care. Pet food, litter, medicines, and specialist products may not be equally available everywhere. Keep a safe reserve of essential items without using products beyond their usable condition. Free-roaming animals may be friendly, frightened, territorial, sick, or unvaccinated. Avoid uncontrolled contact and do not create a feeding routine unless you can manage its effects responsibly. Moving an animal into or out of Egypt involves official health and transport requirements. These depend on the destination and carrier, so preparation must begin well before travel. Public transport and ordinary taxis may not welcome animals. A carrier, secure lead, and agreed private transport make veterinary visits and moving easier.
