Language in El Salvador

Spanish, also called Castilian, is El Salvador’s official language and the main language of administration, education, justice, healthcare, media, employment and public participation. Náhuat, also called Nawat and locally Pipil, is the country’s most prominent living Indigenous language, but its speaker base is small and concentrated mainly in western communities. Indigenous languages have constitutional protection as cultural heritage, yet practical multilingual services remain limited and vary by location.
