Pets in Estonia

A companion animal is called a lemmikloom in Estonia. Ownership means providing suitable food, water, shelter, movement, health care, safety, and social contact throughout the animal's life. A veterinarian, called a veterinaar or loomaarst, provides preventive care, diagnosis, treatment, and advice. Owners should know both their regular clinic and a route for urgent veterinary help. Identification and registration help reunite lost animals with their owners. A microchip works only when the related register contains accurate owner contact details. Local municipalities may set practical rules for animals in public places. Leashes, waste removal, noise, and access to shared areas are common matters that owners must manage. Travel with an animal requires planning beyond an ordinary journey. Identification, health documents, vaccinations, carrier rules, and destination requirements may all matter. Estonia's climate creates seasonal risks. Cold, heat, road salt, ticks, darkness, thin ice, and encounters with wildlife can affect an animal's safety. Rental housing and shared buildings may have contractual or practical conditions concerning pets. Written permission or clarification can prevent later disputes. Lost, found, injured, or neglected animals require an appropriate response. The safest contact may be the owner, a veterinarian, a shelter, the municipality, or emergency services, depending on the situation.
