School in Estonia

Estonia's school system includes preschool education, basic school, upper secondary general education, and vocational education. Children may receive early education in a kindergarten, known as a lasteaed, before entering school. The core compulsory stage is basic school, called põhikool. It covers the main years of general education and builds skills in language, mathematics, science, society, arts, physical activity, and learning itself. Basic school is divided into stages that match the learner's development. Younger pupils usually receive more general classroom support, while older pupils study with more subject teachers and prepare for their next educational choice. After basic school, a learner may apply to a general upper secondary school, called gümnaasium, or enter vocational education, called kutseõpe. Neither path should be treated as suitable for everyone, because they serve different goals and learning styles. Gümnaasium gives a broad academic education and prepares learners for higher education or other next steps. Vocational education combines general knowledge with occupational skills and practical learning. Teaching is mainly conducted in Estonian, although schools and programs may have different language arrangements. A child who is still learning Estonian may need language support, and families should discuss this directly with the school. Schools commonly use digital systems for information, assignments, results, and communication with families. Parents or guardians still need regular personal contact with teachers when a child needs academic, social, or emotional support. School admission and placement depend on the child's age, residence, previous education, language needs, and the type of school. A family should contact its local municipality or a suitable school early and provide records that help place the child correctly.
