Apprenticeship in Eswatini

An apprenticeship in Eswatini is part of Industrial and Vocational Training (IVT), which develops practical occupational skills through an employer and a formal training agreement. It performs a similar function to work-based vocational education but is not identical to the German dual system. An apprentice attends theory and related courses at a technical training institution while developing practical skills under supervision at the employer's workplace. The apprenticeship operates under the Industrial and Vocational Training Act 1982. The employer applies for an apprentice and appoints a supervisor or journeyman mentor. The Directorate of Industrial and Vocational Training (DIVT), within the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, registers the agreement, inspects training, provides training guidance and oversees occupational standards and completion. Designated trades include motor vehicle mechanic, heavy plant mechanic, carpenter or joiner, auto electrician, agricultural mechanic, plumber, turner or machinist, welder or fabricator, blocklayer or plasterer, electrician and maintenance fitter. The standard duration is five years, although remission may shorten the period where the training system recognises qualifying circumstances. The employer must provide proper instruction, the tools and materials required by the training scheme, and release for required courses while continuing remuneration. The employer must also report completion to DIVT. The apprentice must follow the agreement, attend workplace training, courses and examinations, use and care for personal tools required under the scheme, and protect the employer's confidential information and property. Apprentice remuneration follows the applicable Apprenticeship Training Scheme Notice. The rates were revised for 2025/26, so the current DIVT notice should be checked for the relevant trade and training stage rather than relying on an older amount. After successful completion and the employer's report, DIVT can issue a Certificate of Apprenticeship. A trade test is a separate competency-based assessment that can recognise skills gained through informal or non-formal work and can lead to a national Trade-Test Certificate. Technical and vocational education and training providers such as ECOT and Gwamile VOCTIM can provide the institutional part of learning. The apprenticeship depends on a suitable employer, a registered agreement, access to the required technical instruction and the training scheme for the selected occupation. Registration information and forms are handled through DIVT offices and related Ministry of Labour and Social Security locations, including Manzini, Siteki, Big Bend, Vuvulane, Piggs Peak, Mankayane and Nhlangano. The current notice does not state a restriction limiting registration to Emaswati.
