Study in Eswatini

Higher education begins after secondary school and follows a regulated programme leading to a recognized qualification. Public, government-funded and private institutions offer programmes at different levels. Examples include the University of Eswatini, Limkokwing University, Eswatini Medical Christian University, Southern African Nazarene University, Eswatini College of Technology, William Pitcher College, Ngwane Teacher Training College, Good Shepherd Catholic College of Health Sciences, Emergency Medical Rescue College, Advanced School of Information Technology, Gwamile-VOCTIM, Botho University Eswatini Campus and the Institute of Development Management. Other private providers appear in the register maintained by the Eswatini Higher Education Council, known as ESHEC. A programme should be checked for institutional registration, programme accreditation and any suspension before enrolment. ESHEC handles higher education registration, accreditation, quality assurance and institutional reviews. The Eswatini Qualifications Authority connects qualifications with the Eswatini Qualifications Framework, or ESQF, which has ten levels. The framework includes certificates at levels 1 to 8, diplomas at levels 5 to 8, associate degrees at level 6 with 240 credits, bachelor's degrees at level 7 with 360 credits, bachelor's honours degrees and postgraduate certificates or diplomas at level 8 with 120 credits, master's degrees at level 9 with 180 credits and doctoral degrees at level 10 with 360 credits. Credit requirements do not create one uniform programme duration for every institution or field. Admission rules vary by institution, faculty and programme. A common university standard is at least six passes in SGCSE, IGCSE, GCE O Level or A Level, IB or Matric, including at least five C grades and English. A common college standard is at least five passes, including three C grades, with at least a D in English. The University of Eswatini generally requires six passes for undergraduate entry, including a C in English and four relevant subjects. Programme-specific subjects remain binding, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place because institutions may have limited capacity. Mature-age entry, advanced entry and exemptions may be available for applicants with relevant qualifications such as diplomas or A Levels. Applications are made to the institution; the University of Eswatini uses an online application process, while deadlines depend on the institution and intake. Costs depend on the provider, programme, study mode and student category. At the University of Eswatini, one published local or Southern African Development Community example lists E549 per credit for full-time non-science undergraduate study, E596 per credit for full-time science study and E453 per credit for science study through the Institute of Distance Education or part-time study. Application, registration, caution and affiliation charges may apply in addition to tuition, together with books, printing, transport, food and accommodation. International fees are calculated separately, so the institution's current fee schedule should be checked. EmaSwati may apply through the government Pre-Service Tertiary Education and Training Scholarship or Study Loan scheme. Eligibility generally requires citizenship, completed secondary education, admission to a full-time programme at an accredited institution and no previous government study loan. Selection is based on merit and priority areas, may include an interview and is not automatic. A study loan may cover tuition, books, registration, uniforms and approved internship or project costs. Student Assistance Finance can cover accommodation, meals and personal or other allowances; the study loan is 50% discounted, while the assistance loan is fully repayable. Published 2023-2027 priority areas include natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health fields, agriculture, economics and business, information and communication technology, science and technology education, social sciences, tourism and hospitality, environment, manufacturing and general industry. The application is made through the relevant government funding unit. The University of Eswatini Foundation and institution-specific bursaries provide additional possibilities, but no general bursary is guaranteed. Institutions set their own curricula, coursework, examinations, progression rules, graduation requirements and student services. Credit transfer, articulation between qualifications and recognition of prior learning can support movement between programmes where the receiving institution accepts the credits or prior learning. After a recognized qualification, typical immediate pathways include employment, self-employment, further accredited study and academic or professional progression.
