Religion in Finland

Religion in Finland is both a private matter and a visible part of history, holidays, buildings, family ceremonies, and public discussion. Belief, membership, and participation are separate matters and should not be assumed from one another. The Evangelical Lutheran Church has had the strongest historical influence on national customs and the calendar. Its role remains visible even among people who do not regularly practise religion. The Orthodox Church has deep historical roots, especially in eastern Finland and Karelia. Its worship, icons, fasting traditions, and calendar contribute a distinct part of Finnish religious life. Other Christian churches and movements include Catholic, Pentecostal, Free Church, and many international congregations. Their organisation, worship, and community practices differ. Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and other religious communities form part of contemporary Finland. Migration has increased the range of languages, traditions, meeting places, and festivals found in the country. Many people describe themselves as non-religious, secular, agnostic, or atheist. Humanist and other non-religious worldviews can also guide ethics, ceremonies, and community life. Finnish law and public life broadly protect freedom of religion and freedom from religion. People may practise, change, leave, or decline a religion, while ordinary rules protecting safety and the rights of others still apply. Schools and institutions may encounter religious education, worldview education, dietary practices, clothing, holidays, prayer, and ceremonies. Practical arrangements depend on the setting, so clear communication is important. Religion can provide meaning, belonging, care, music, volunteering, and support during major life events. It can also involve disagreement, exclusion, or pressure, and personal consent and equal treatment remain essential.
