School in Finland

Children in Finland normally take part in pre-primary education, called esiopetus, before comprehensive school. This stage supports readiness for school through guided activities and play. Comprehensive school is called peruskoulu and covers basic education for children and young people. It provides a shared curriculum foundation while schools and municipalities make some local choices. Teaching includes languages, mathematics, environmental and social subjects, arts, crafts, physical education, and other areas. Pupils also learn cooperation, study habits, digital skills, and everyday responsibility. A pupil's learning is followed through classroom work, assignments, feedback, and assessment. Schools communicate with guardians about progress and important practical matters. Support is intended to begin when a pupil needs it. It may include differentiated teaching, special education, student welfare services, language support, or an individual learning arrangement. Finland has Finnish-language and Swedish-language education, and some schools use other teaching languages. Pupils who are new to the country may receive preparatory education or support for learning Finnish or Swedish. After peruskoulu, students generally choose lukio, which is general upper secondary school, or vocational education and training. Guidance at school helps them consider their interests, abilities, and future plans. The system aims for equal opportunity, but school experiences and available options can differ by municipality and individual need. Families should contact their municipality or local school when enrolling a child or requesting support.
