A romantic relationship is commonly called a relation amoureuse, and a couple is un couple. Partenaire is a flexible word for partner, while petit ami and petite amie often describe a boyfriend or girlfriend. Dating practices vary widely across France. People may meet through friends, work, study, activities, social events, or digital services, and there is no single required path to becoming a couple. A relationship becomes exclusive only through mutual understanding. Clear conversation is safer than assuming that affection, repeated dates, or physical intimacy means both people have made the same commitment. Consent is necessary for every sexual or intimate act. It must be freely given, can be withdrawn, and cannot be replaced by silence, pressure, marriage, or an earlier yes. Couples may live together informally in concubinage or union libre. They may also choose a PACS, a registered civil partnership, or marriage, and these forms create different legal and administrative consequences. Moving in together often brings practical questions about rent, bills, property, chores, privacy, guests, and future plans. Written records and direct agreements reduce confusion even when partners trust each other. Relationships can bring affection, companionship, shared projects, and mutual support.
