Art in Gambia

The National Centre for Arts and Culture, known as the NCAC, is the main semi-autonomous institution for coordination, promotion, protection and preservation of art and culture in The Gambia. It operates from the National Museum premises on Independence Drive in Banjul and works under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The NCAC is generally open Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 16:00 and Friday from 8:00 to 12:30. Its published contact details include info@ncac.gm and +220 4226244 or +220 2177101. The NCAC department responsible for literary arts, music, dance, drama, fashion, visual arts and film supports artist and group registration for its database and directory. It also handles non-resident artist performance licences. The criteria, fees, processing times and online procedures for these services are not clearly published, so applicants should confirm the current requirements directly with the NCAC. Visual art and craft are commonly encountered through artists' associations, exhibitions, festivals and markets in Banjul, Bakau, Brikama, Fajara, Kotu and Senegambia. Typical products include carvings, masks, batik, handwoven fabrics, leatherwork and jewellery. Sales are often informal and tourism-related, with prices commonly negotiated rather than set through a centralized gallery or national art-market system. The Visual Arts Association of the Gambia supports promotion, cultural preservation and the transfer of skills and knowledge. Music and performance include live music, dance, drama and storytelling. Kora, bala and tama traditions remain visible in local performance, while griot, Jali, Gewel and Gawlo traditions preserve oral history, poetry and music through apprenticeship and community transmission. The Ebunjan Theatre is a purpose-built theatre. A national theatre and academy appear in NCAC policy goals, but a functioning national institution of that scope is not reliably documented. The Gambia also has formal and community-based heritage institutions. The Department of Cultural Heritage works with tangible and intangible heritage, museums, monuments, sites, research and documentation. The Gambia National Museum has four satellite national museums and three private or community museums. Its Oral Archives and Research and Documentation Division contain more than 5,000 audiovisual recordings, together with musicology and poetry materials, digitization work and publications. The Gambia National Museum charges published entrance fees of D30 for adults, D10 for children and D100 for non-Gambians. Kunta Kinteh Island uses published fees of D50, D10 and D200 for the same categories, while Fort Bullen, Wassu Museum, Arch 22 and the Kankurang Centre each list D30, D10 and D100. Living heritage can have access rules that are not visible in a market or gallery. The Kankurang is a Manding initiation rite included on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008 and is especially associated with August and September. Community and elder-based permissions, sacred forests and ritual context must be respected. A single formal national training or funding pathway for writers is not clearly established. Film production exists mainly through private and on-the-job work, television, documentaries, drama sketches and music videos. The sector has limited dedicated infrastructure, scarce funding, few cinemas and piracy risks, although filmmakers can participate in international festivals. Architecture, design, photography and digital art have no reliably documented specialized national institute, curriculum, market or access system. Copyright law nevertheless covers architecture, maps, technical drawings, photographs, computer programs and databases. Associations for photographers and design-related activity appear in policy monitoring, but their local status and reach are not sufficiently documented to treat them as a unified national system. The Copyright Act 2004 protects works such as novels, poems, plays, films, musical compositions, choreography, paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, architecture, maps, technical drawings, software and databases. Performers, phonogram producers and broadcasters also have related rights. The Copyright Office provides registration, awareness and enforcement functions; the law provides for a register, deposit and a certificate of registration, but the current registration fee is not verified. Copyright protection and evidence of ownership are separate from selling an artwork at a market. Folklore has a special form of continuing protection. The Gambia Collecting Society is provided for in law, but its current operational reach is not sufficiently established. The Arts and Culture Policy 2018–2027 supports artist and creator development, exhibitions, international exposure, local commissions, royalties, anti-piracy work, associations, a National Cultural Ensemble and regional support. A National Endowment Fund for Arts and Culture was operationalized through regulations signed in 2023, but current payment arrangements, application procedures, budgets and access conditions are not verified. No grant should be assumed without confirming an active call and its published terms.
