Elections in Gambia

Elections in The Gambia select the President, National Assembly members and local government representatives, and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) administers public elections and referendums. The President is elected directly for five years: a candidate needs more than half of valid votes in the first ballot, or a second ballot takes place within 14 days. National Assembly elections use single-member constituencies and plurality voting for 53 elected seats, while the President nominates five additional members. Voters register with the IEC, receive a Voting Card and vote only at the polling station recorded on that card.
