Friendship in Gambia

People usually build friendships in The Gambia through regular shared activities, conversation and mutual help. Family and community networks, schools, youth associations, sports teams, community playgrounds, civil-society organisations, village development committees and local religious or traditional structures can provide opportunities to meet. The National Youth Council, the Department of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council support organised youth or sports access, while the National Youth Service Scheme and the President's International Award can connect participants through structured activities. Taking part in a group does not automatically create a friendship; trust develops through repeated contact, consent, respect, privacy and reliable behaviour. Private friendship requires no application, age limit or official registration. Access to an organised activity depends on the provider and may involve age limits, location, available places, conduct rules, safeguarding measures or practical requirements. Sports and youth policies refer to accessibility, gender equality, safeguarding and inclusion of people with disabilities, but there is no general entitlement to a friendship or to a place in a club. Participation may involve local fees, equipment or transport costs, and informal friendships usually require time, travel and communication rather than a national fee. The Constitution of The Gambia protects freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, religion and movement, subject to legal limits related to public order, safety and morality. Friendship itself is not a contract and creates no legally enforceable duties. Respect, mutual agreement, privacy and freedom from coercion or exploitation remain practical boundaries. Exclusion, bullying, group pressure, exploitation, abuse and loss of privacy can occur in private or organised settings. A friendship can continue through regular calls, visits or messages when people live apart. Conflict may lead to a conversation, clearer boundaries, a temporary pause in contact or a voluntary ending; no formal dissolution procedure applies. When a friendship involves threats or harassment, use a protection pathway instead of treating the conduct as an ordinary disagreement.
