Language in Gambia

English is the official language of The Gambia, meaning that it serves as the formal language of government, national procedures and most education. Mandinka, Wollof, Fula, Jola, Sarahule and other Gambian languages are widely used in daily life, culture and community participation. Many people use English alongside one or more local languages, but language use varies by region, family, community and institution. The Gambia has no fully established nationwide system that gives local languages the same formal administrative status as English.
