A consumer is generally an individual acting mainly outside a trade or profession, while a trader acts for business purposes. This distinction matters because special consumer protections do not cover every private sale or business purchase. Before a purchase, a trader should provide important information clearly enough for an informed choice. The identity of the trader, main features, total price, and important conditions should not be hidden or misleading. Advertising and sales practices should be fair. False claims, omitted key information, or undue pressure may prevent a consumer from making a free and informed decision. Goods should match their description and the agreed expectations. Services should be supplied as agreed and with the level of care required by the applicable legal and contractual rules. When a product or service is not compliant, possible remedies may include repair, replacement, price reduction, ending the contract, or compensation. The correct order and availability depend on the kind of problem and whether a particular remedy is reasonable. A commercial warranty is an extra promise by a seller or producer. It can add protection, but its wording does not automatically replace rights that arise under the law. Distance and off-premises transactions can involve special information duties and withdrawal rights. Exceptions can apply, so a consumer should check the transaction type before assuming that every purchase can simply be returned. A complaint normally starts with the trader and should describe the purchase, problem, evidence, and requested remedy. If no solution is reached, a consumer authority, alternative process, or court may be relevant according to the case. Consumer protection improves fairness but does not insure every disappointing purchase. Ordinary wear, misuse, private transactions, changed preferences, and weak evidence can limit a claim.
