Elections in Georgia

Elections in Georgia are based on constitutional principles and election law. Core ideas include universal and equal participation for eligible citizens, ballot secrecy, regular voting, and public administration of the process. Parliamentary elections choose the members of the national Parliament. Political parties present candidate lists, voters support an electoral choice, and seats are assigned under the electoral rules in force for that election. Municipal elections choose local representative bodies and local leadership. Voters may encounter different ballot choices for a municipal council, called sakrebulo, and for a mayor, because these are separate offices. The President of Georgia is selected through an indirect constitutional process rather than an ordinary nationwide popular ballot. This reflects Georgia's parliamentary system, in which the government led by the Prime Minister directs everyday executive policy. Election administration has several levels. The Central Election Commission, often shortened to CEC, oversees the national system, while lower election commissions organize districts, polling stations, voting, counting, and official records. Before voting, a citizen normally checks voter registration and the assigned polling place. At the polling station, officials confirm eligibility, issue the appropriate ballot, protect secrecy, and place completed ballots into the secured voting process. After polls close, election workers count ballots and prepare formal results records. Parties, authorized observers, and election officials may monitor procedures, while complaints and disputes follow designated administrative or court channels. Elections offer a peaceful way to choose leaders, compare programs, and hold officials accountable. Their value depends on informed voters, genuine competition, secret voting, reliable administration, and lawful ways to investigate mistakes or misconduct.
