Family in Georgia includes many possible arrangements, such as parents and children, couples, single-parent households, multigenerational homes, and relatives living separately. There is no single Georgian family model. The Georgian word oj akhi, normally written as one word in Georgian, means family or household. NaTesavebi means relatives and can include grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other kin. Extended relatives may remain involved in celebrations, care, advice, and everyday decisions. Their involvement can be helpful, but its strength differs between families and individuals. Some households share housing, meals, childcare, elder care, or money. Others keep these responsibilities separate, especially when relatives live in different cities or countries. Family occasions may include birthdays, weddings, religious celebrations, funerals, and shared meals. A supra, or organized Georgian feast, can bring relatives together and may include a tamada who guides the toasts. Respect for older relatives is common, but age does not remove another person's rights or choices. Healthy families balance care and tradition with consent, privacy, and individual needs. Family networks can offer belonging and practical help during illness, unemployment, relocation, or childcare. They can also bring pressure when relatives expect agreement about education, work, marriage, or living arrangements. Legal status, emotional closeness, and shared residence are different things. A person may be legally related but distant, or may treat a non-relative as part of their chosen family.
