School in Georgia

School education in Georgia is commonly called general education. It is organized in stages that move from primary learning through basic education and then to the upper secondary level. Primary school builds foundations in reading, writing, mathematics, communication, and understanding the world. Later stages introduce broader and more demanding subjects and give pupils increasing responsibility for their work. Public schools are a central part of the system, while private schools offer another option. A school’s ownership does not by itself show its quality, so families should examine teaching, safety, support, travel, and the pupil’s needs. Georgian is the main teaching language in most schools. Some schools or sectors serve linguistic minority communities, and foreign languages are also studied, but families should confirm the actual language used in lessons and assessments. The school year is divided into periods of teaching, holidays, and assessment. Pupils normally attend classes, complete assigned work, receive feedback, and progress through grades according to the applicable school rules. Assessment can include classroom participation, written work, projects, tests, and examinations. Its purpose is both to measure achievement and to show where a pupil needs more practice. Admission or transfer usually requires contact with the receiving school and documents identifying the child and showing previous schooling. A child arriving from abroad may need document translation, grade placement, language support, or an individual review. Schools can support academic learning, social development, and participation in community life. However, large classes, distance, language barriers, disability access, or differences between schools can limit a pupil’s experience. Families should first identify nearby realistic options and speak directly with each school. A visit and a written document checklist can reveal more than reputation alone.
