Languages in Guinea-Bissau

Language learning in Guinea-Bissau focuses mainly on Portuguese for school, administration and formal work, Kriol for everyday life and oral communication, and French and English as foreign languages. More than 20 African languages are passed on in families and communities, while formal learning opportunities for them are only partly documented. Portuguese is the language of instruction and administration, but it can make access to school more difficult when it is not spoken at home. Courses are concentrated mainly in Bissau, while digital and community-based offers only partly compensate for regional gaps.
