Arrival in Equatorial Guinea

A passport should remain valid for at least six months after entry. Travelers whose nationality requires a visa should apply through the official e-Visa platform or an Equatorial Guinean embassy and print the approval. An e-Visa is an electronic visa approval; it does not by itself guarantee admission, because the immigration officer makes the final entry decision. Visa categories under Decreto 49/2019 include tourism, business, humanitarian and emergency travel, and conferences, conventions or seminars. Requirements depend on nationality, purpose and travel path. The application may also require a hotel reservation or host address, an invitation, insurance, proof of funds, a criminal-record certificate or a photograph. Keep originals and copies separately, and do not rely on intermediaries for passport or extension procedures. Processing guidance varies. The e-Visa platform gives an indicative period of about 72 hours, while other official information refers to about five working days. Several weeks of reserve are sensible because fees and processing can depend on nationality, travel path and purpose. No general uniform fee has been confirmed; examples include EUR 105 for a Spanish short-stay visa under 90 days and USD 75 including processing for a Taiwan e-Visa. Check the current official requirement and fee before payment. Air travel is the main arrival method. Malabo International Airport serves the island region of Bioko, Bata International Airport serves the mainland region, and Mongomeyén may handle international, domestic, private or charter flights. Confirm schedules and frequencies before booking. Do not assume that a visa on arrival is available to ordinary travelers. A special arrangement for ICAN participants does not establish a general rule. Reports dated 8 September 2026 state that the mainland land borders have been closed since 15 December 2025 for an indefinite period. Air and sea borders were reported open, but sea travel should be avoided because of security risks and confirmed again before use. Annobón should not be treated as a normal arrival or travel option without current confirmation. At the border, officials may ask for the entry purpose, return or onward travel, accommodation or host details and financial means. Check the entry stamp and keep the passport, visa or permit available during the stay. Identity checks and checkpoints are frequent. Photography of airports, police or military sites and government buildings is prohibited. Follow instructions from border officials, local police and security personnel. A hotel reservation or host address is useful both for the visa application and for the first days after arrival. Keep the host's telephone number, address and booking evidence offline. There is no reliable evidence of a general national arrival-registration procedure equivalent to German municipal registration. The documented formal steps concern the accommodation details used for entry and the later regularization of visas or residence permits. Spanish dominates institutional and everyday transport communication. Fang, Bubi, Annobonés and Pichinglish are used locally, while French and Portuguese are co-official but have limited general reach. Prepare Spanish-language documents and a Spanish-speaking host or contact where possible, especially for travel outside the main urban centers. The legal currency is the Central African CFA franc, written XAF, issued within the BEAC system. BEAC is the regional central bank serving the Central African monetary area. The fixed reference rate is EUR 1 = XAF 655.957. Card acceptance is very limited outside a few large hotels, international cards are not guaranteed to work, and ATMs are limited in Malabo and Bata. Banks exchange EUR, GBP and USD. Carry a reserve of XAF and a backup payment card rather than depending on one ATM or card. Public transport is particularly limited on the mainland. Official taxis and hotel transfers are preferable to unverified rides. Avoid driving at night, expect road checks and carry the passport, visa and, when relevant, vehicle documents. Domestic flights are often more dependable than spontaneous land or sea travel, but schedules and availability require confirmation. Health preparation should cover the whole journey. A yellow-fever vaccination is recommended from nine months of age, and a vaccination certificate is required for arrivals from yellow-fever risk areas. Malaria occurs nationwide and presents a high risk, so obtain travel-medical advice about prophylaxis and use mosquito protection. Hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid vaccination depend on the itinerary and personal risk. Carry health and evacuation insurance and enough prescribed medicine for the entire trip plus a reserve. A current travel notice reports a possible 21-day quarantine for travelers from Ebola-affected regions of Uganda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo; verify the status before departure. Published emergency numbers include ambulance 3101, police 666 404040 or 666 303030, and alternative codes 112 for medical help, 113 or 114 for police and 115 for fire services. Availability can be unreliable, so contact the hotel or host, arrange private transport when necessary and notify the insurer at the same time. Medical care is more available in Malabo than outside urban centers. A short-stay visa typically allows up to 90 days, but the exact permitted period depends on the visa and circumstances. Apply early to Seguridad Nacional, the national security and immigration authority, or the responsible local office for an extension or status change. Longer stays require a permiso de residencia, or residence permit; current travel information describes a one-year permit. Paid work additionally requires a permiso de trabajo, or work permit. Remaining without valid documents can lead to checks, fines, detention or deportation. Visa, residence and work permits do not replace separate arrangements for accommodation or communication services.
