Taxes in Guatemala

Guatemala has national and municipal taxes. The exact duties of a person or business depend on activities, legal form, income type, property, transactions, and tax registration. The Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria is commonly known as SAT. It manages major national tax registration, declarations, collection, customs matters, and related controls. The Número de Identificación Tributaria, or NIT, identifies taxpayers in many tax and commercial processes. Registration information should remain accurate because it connects the taxpayer with declarations, invoices, and official communications. Impuesto al Valor Agregado, or IVA, is a value-added tax connected with many sales of goods and services. A business may collect IVA from customers and may have duties concerning invoices, records, declarations, and payment to the tax authority. Impuesto Sobre la Renta, or ISR, concerns taxable income. Different forms of work, business activity, rent, or other income can be treated differently, so the taxpayer must identify the category that matches the real activity. Property, vehicles, imports, and municipal activities can create additional obligations. National registration does not automatically replace local permits, charges, or property-related duties. Invoices and accounting records show what was earned, purchased, collected, and paid. Mixing household money, business income, and collected taxes makes errors more likely and hides whether the activity is profitable. Tax compliance usually follows a cycle of registration, documentation, calculation, declaration, payment, and record retention. Even a period with little or no activity may still require attention depending on the taxpayer’s registered status. Tax rules can change and individual cases can differ.
