Health in Guinea

The Ministère de la Santé et de l’Hygiène Publique sets national policy, regulates services and coordinates prevention, surveillance and public-health programs through eight regions and 38 health prefectures, including 33 prefectures and five Conakry communes. Regional Health Directorates and Prefectural Health Directorates manage local implementation. The official digital Carte Sanitaire can help identify facilities, but opening hours, bed capacity, ambulance access, available tests and current fees require local confirmation. A common care sequence is community relais, also called community health workers, followed by a Poste de Santé, Centre de Santé or Centre de Santé Amélioré. More complex cases may go to a Centre Médical de Commune or Hôpital Préfectoral, then to an Hôpital Régional or a national hospital or CHU. Referral quality depends on staffing, transport, diagnostic equipment, medicine stocks and the receiving facility's capacity. Rural distance and infrastructure gaps can delay care. Malaria is endemic throughout Guinea and transmission is high. Mosquito protection, testing and prompt treatment reduce the risk of severe illness. A rapid diagnostic test checks for malaria infection; public-sector malaria testing is documented as free. Seasonal malaria chemoprevention is also free for eligible children aged 3 to 59 months. In 2026, the program covered 17 districts and targeted more than 1.3 million children; reported coverage in 2025 was 95%. Routine vaccination remains available through the national vaccination program, although DTP3 coverage among one-year-olds was 60% in 2023. Maternal and neonatal tetanus was eliminated in 2024. Maternal and child health services include skilled birth attendance, midwifery, vaccination, nutrition support, family planning and community follow-up. Skilled birth attendance was 55% in 2023. Distance, service costs, shortages of staff and infrastructure, adolescent pregnancy, child marriage and female genital mutilation can affect access and outcomes. Guinea also provides programs for tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, nutrition and community disease surveillance. Fever in a malaria area needs same-day clinical assessment; tuberculosis and HIV treatment require adherence and scheduled review. The Direction Nationale de la Pharmacie et du Médicament regulates medicines, while the Pharmacie Centrale de Guinée supports national supply and regional storage. Licensed pharmacies and authorized facilities are safer sources than clandestine sellers because counterfeit medicines and unverified products remain a risk. Medicine availability can differ between facilities. Anyone who relies on regular treatment should carry the prescription and an adequate supply when continuity may be difficult. Mental-health capacity is still developing. The Institut National de la Santé Mentale is listed as a public autonomous body, and a 2026 Ministry project addresses specialist centres, training and stigma. This does not establish broad nationwide specialist access. French is used for official terminology, and local-language support may be needed during consultations. Patients have protection under the Code de la Santé Publique L/97/021/AN and medical-deontology rules, including dignity, informed consent and medical confidentiality. HIV-related law adds confidentiality and consent safeguards. Patients and families should provide an accurate medical history, follow agreed treatment, return for scheduled review and respect facility rules. Emergency situations can create limited exceptions to ordinary consent procedures. No reliable nationwide emergency dispatcher or emergency telephone number was verified in official Guinean sources. In acute danger, contact the nearest available health facility or hospital and arrange local transport rather than relying on an unverified number. After treatment, keep the discharge or referral note, reconcile medicines, confirm the follow-up date and use community health workers for appropriate postnatal, child, nutrition, tuberculosis, HIV or chronic-care follow-up. Worsening symptoms or relapse should lead to a return to the previous facility or escalation through the referral chain.
