Everyday goods in Guinea move through parallel retail channels. Open-air markets, locally called marchés, boutiques and small shops sell fresh products, imported packaged staples, clothing, household goods and personal-care items. Superettes and supermarchés provide a more formal alternative, especially in Conakry. In interior areas, supply depends more strongly on roads, addresses, wholesalers and small traders, so availability and prices can change by location. A tool called SIMPRIX monitors prices for some staple and strategic goods, but it does not guarantee a fixed price for consumers. Check food expiry dates, packaging seals, labels, quantities and storage conditions. For soap, cosmetics, cleaning products, batteries and other household goods, inspect the seal, origin, expiry date and conformity information. The Office National de Contrôle de la Qualité (ONCQ) controls food and non-food goods at production, import, commercialisation and local-market stages. Packaged food information should appear in an official or otherwise understandable language. Clothing purchases usually require checking the size, fabric, seams and authenticity before payment because no general return practice has been established. Ask the seller about exchanges before completing the purchase. Imported technology often passes from an importer or wholesaler to a retailer. Test the device, check its serial number, request a receipt and clarify warranty and after-sales service before paying. Repair and support are not automatic and vary by product, seller and location. Cash is the most widely accepted payment method. Bank transfers, cheques, debit or credit cards, prepaid cards and mobile money are also available, but card acceptance is uneven, particularly outside major formal merchants. Mobile money uses a phone and an agent for cash-in, cash-out, transfers or electronic payments. Common services include Orange Money, MTN MoMo, PayCard, CashMoov Money, MicrobitMoney and YMO. A national identity document may be required to open a mobile-money account, and distance to an agent, account access and fees can limit its usefulness. The BCRG, Guinea's central bank, supervises payment infrastructure. Its Switch National Monétique et Digital, launched in 2025, is intended to improve interoperability between banks, electronic-money institutions, microfinance providers and payment companies, but acceptance and fees should still be verified for each transaction. Online shopping remains fragmented and emerging. Social-commerce offers through Facebook and similar channels may require direct coordination with the seller because delivery routes, addresses and timing are not uniform. Under the framework overseen by the Autorité de Régulation des Postes et Télécommunications (ARPT), online commercial activity is legally permitted, but providers face registration and technical obligations, including a dedicated .gn or .com domain or site, trust-service subscription and a secure transaction system. An online offer or pre-order should state the product or service, price in GNF, taxes and delivery charges clearly and without ambiguity. Guinean law places responsibility for product safety, hygiene, quality and truthful information on sellers and other commercial businesses. Law L/94/003/CTRN and food law L/2021/033/AN prohibit or sanction misleading information about origin, quantity, composition, use or risks. Buyers should retain receipts, messages, delivery records and payment evidence. No general statutory cooling-off or return period has been verified for ordinary purchases, so an automatic refund or exchange should not be assumed. The seller's stated policy and the condition of the goods usually determine the practical remedy. A complaint normally starts with the seller. For unsafe or misleading goods, a buyer can approach the Direction Nationale du Commerce Intérieur et de la Concurrence, the ONCQ or another competent control service. Telecom, postal and digital-service complaints should first go to the provider and can then be submitted through the ARPT's Gestion des Réclamations process. Payment-system oversight belongs to the BCRG. Delivery, mobile-money, card and other service charges depend on the provider or seller, and there is no verified current nationwide tariff for all such services. A decree signed on 21 September 2024 bans the production, import, sale, distribution and use of single-use plastic packaging and objects in Guinea, subject to listed exceptions such as medical, agricultural, military, waste-collection, PET-bottle and certain transport-related uses. Biodegradable packaging must meet specified requirements for material, thickness, resistance, useful life, marking and certification coordinated with the Ministry responsible for the Environment and the Industry and Commerce authorities. Reusable or compliant biodegradable packaging is the safer choice, while enforcement can differ by locality.
