Apprenticeship in Hungary

The closest Hungarian framework to apprenticeship is szakképzés, meaning vocational education and training. It prepares learners for skilled occupations through general subjects, occupational theory, and practical work. Two important school types are the technikum and the szakképző iskola. A technikum usually combines broader secondary education with preparation for a technical occupation, while a szakképző iskola focuses more directly on vocational preparation. Practical training may take place in a school workshop, a training center, or a company. When an employer takes a formal training role, the arrangement is commonly described as dual vocational training. Learners normally follow an approved occupational program. They build practical competence, learn workplace safety, complete assignments, and prepare for assessments connected to the chosen occupation. A vocational relationship is not identical to ordinary employment. The learner’s status, supervision, learning duties, payment arrangements, and workplace rights depend on the formal training setup. Hungarian is commonly the teaching and working language. A learner needs enough occupational Hungarian to understand instructions, safety rules, tools, materials, customers, and assessments. Vocational education can offer a direct route into skilled work and may provide useful employer contacts. Its limits include early specialization, differences between training places, and the possibility that a qualification does not transfer automatically to another country. Changing occupations or continuing education can still be possible after vocational training. Some routes support further secondary study, additional vocational qualifications, or progression toward higher education. Before applying, learners should confirm the exact occupation, qualification, practical training site, entry conditions, and completion document. Foreign school records or qualifications may also need formal recognition or translation.
