Friendship in Iceland

Friendships in Iceland usually develop through repeated contact rather than through a formal system. Common settings include íþróttafélög, meaning sports clubs, cultural activities, municipal leisure programs, volunteering, workplaces, schools, walks and online communication. Municipal youth and social centres called félagsmiðstöðvar, organized leisure activities called frístundastarf and community participation programs can create opportunities to meet people, but they do not guarantee a friendship. Icelandic terms such as visiting friends, phone friends, walking friends and Hundavinir describe practical forms of regular social contact rather than legal relationship categories. The 2023 Statistics Iceland Media and Culture Barometer, based on 1,371 people aged 16 and older, found that 71% spent time at least monthly with family, close relatives or friends living outside their household, while 34% did so weekly. Five percent reported no such contact, and 87% of that group were of foreign origin. Ninety-two percent had used social media during the previous year, and 94% of social-media users used it to communicate with relatives, friends or acquaintances. Twenty-four percent reported volunteering and 15% carrying out tasks for voluntary organizations. Sports are a major local contact channel. ÍSÍ, the Icelandic Sports and Olympic Federation, and UMFÍ connect a large network of clubs; reported figures are about 500 sports clubs, while UMFÍ lists 26 member associations, 478 clubs and about 290,000 members. Membership under ÍSÍ statutes is open to all and includes equal member rights, including voting rights, subject to the club's rules. Fees depend on the club, activity, age and frequency. Trial sessions are often free. Municipal support commonly applies to activities lasting at least 10 weeks, but the amount and eligible ages differ by municipality. Reykjavík's Recreation Card provides up to ISK 75,000 per year for children aged 6 to 18 with legal residence, for eligible attendance and exercise fees. In Reykjavík during 2026, youth workshop fees were listed at ISK 952 or ISK 1,909, and after-school programs for children aged 6 to 9 at ISK 4,893 to ISK 18,975 per month, excluding additional costs. A fee waiver for newly arrived children is available under local conditions for up to three months during the school year or three weeks during summer. Reykjavík has 25 félagsmiðstöðvar serving mainly ages 10 to 16, including four specialized offers for disabled children and young people. YouthWorks supports young people aged 13 to 18 in Reykjavík who experience social isolation or have limited social skills; access is arranged through a counselor. The Icelandic Red Cross offers visiting friends, phone friends, walking friends and dog visits. A client applies according to their needs and wishes, and the Red Cross matches the person with a trained volunteer under confidentiality rules. Phone-friend contact usually takes place once or twice a week for about 30 minutes. Depending on the project, volunteers are generally at least 18 years old, and support may last about one hour weekly, three hours twice a month or six to twelve months. The Red Cross also runs social activities for refugees and migrants in Reykjavík, Reykjanesbær and Akureyri, including women’s and youth groups, Icelandic practice, recreation and social participation. Organized activities may have age, residence, capacity and provider requirements. Municipalities are responsible for social services under Act No. 40/1991, including social and financial security, prevention, counseling and assistance. Access to a public service depends especially on legal domicile and local rules, not on having a friendship. A friendship itself creates no maintenance duty, inheritance right, representation authority or residence effect in Iceland. Boundaries, consent and confidentiality are primarily private matters, while clubs and volunteer programs follow their own statutes, safeguarding rules and data-protection requirements. Primary education is compulsory from ages 6 to 16. When a child or young person faces isolation, bullying or difficulty forming social connections, a school, municipality, youth centre or local child service coordinator can help; a child service coordinator is locally accessible to children and young people up to age 18. There is no formal process for ending a friendship and no registration to delete. Contact may stop or become less frequent privately. If ending a friendship leaves someone isolated or distressed, municipal social services, a school, a child service coordinator or a social-inclusion program can provide support.
