Family in India

Family in India is often called parivaar in Hindi, with different words used in the country's many other languages. Family may mean one household or a much wider circle of relatives connected through birth, marriage, adoption, or long-term care. A joint family generally includes relatives from more than one generation who live together or closely share money, work, care, and decisions. A nuclear family usually centres on parents or caregivers and their children, although close links with extended relatives may continue. Households in India also include single-parent families, blended families, couples without children, people living alone, and relatives caring for children or elders. Migration for education and work means that some families remain closely involved while living in different cities or countries. Family members may share childcare, elder care, household work, income, property responsibilities, and support during illness or unemployment. This network can provide security, knowledge, contacts, and a strong sense of belonging. Age and family position can influence decisions, and elders may be consulted about education, work, marriage, housing, or ceremonies. However, authority is organised differently in every home, and younger adults may make decisions independently or negotiate them with relatives. Kinship has many specific terms. Relationships with maternal and paternal relatives, older and younger siblings, and different kinds of in-laws may have distinct names and expectations in local languages. Family celebrations and duties vary by religion, region, caste, language, and household. Births, marriages, festivals, deaths, and visits may bring relatives together, but there is no single Indian family custom that applies to everyone. Family closeness does not justify abuse, forced decisions, financial control, or denial of privacy. Healthy families can discuss duties, distribute care fairly, respect consent, and allow members to seek outside support.
