Language in India

India has no single national language. Its constitutional and administrative system recognizes multiple languages, while states use languages suited to their populations and institutions. Hindi is widely spoken, especially across much of northern and central India, and uses Devanagari in its standard written form. Many Indians do not use Hindi as their first or preferred language. English is important in higher education, business, law, technology, national communication, and some schools. Access and confidence vary greatly, so English ability should not be confused with intelligence or education. Major regional languages include Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese, and many others. Each has its own literature, media, identities, and speech varieties. India uses several writing systems, including Devanagari, Bengali-Assamese, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Perso-Arabic scripts. A language and a script are related but not identical. Multilingual people often change languages within a conversation. This code-switching can express comfort, precision, identity, politeness, or membership in a group. Forms of address and levels of politeness matter. Pronouns, kinship terms, honorifics, names, and titles may signal age, respect, affection, or social distance. Language can create opportunity and belonging, but it can also exclude people. Clear communication means choosing an accessible language, checking understanding, and allowing translation when needed.
