Languages in India

India is multilingual rather than organised around one language used in every situation. A person may use one language at home, another in the neighbourhood, and another at school or work. The Constitution recognises multiple languages, and states use their own official language arrangements. Local public services and documents may therefore use different languages in different parts of India. Hindi is widely used in many areas but is not equally common everywhere. English is important in parts of higher education, business, administration, technology, and communication between people with different first languages. Regional languages are central to local identity and daily participation. Languages such as Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, and many others have established communities and literary traditions. A mother tongue or home language is the language a person first uses closely in family life. Protecting it can support relationships, identity, and learning, even when another language is needed for school or work. The medium of instruction is the language used to teach subjects. It is different from studying a language as one subject, and this distinction matters when choosing a school or course. Language learning involves listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These abilities may develop at different speeds, especially when the language uses an unfamiliar script. Knowing several languages can improve mobility, employment, study, and community connections. However, accent discrimination and unequal access to high-quality teaching can create barriers. A practical learner chooses the language and level for a specific purpose. Daily conversation may require local vocabulary, while academic or professional work may require formal reading and writing.
