An acquaintance is commonly called a kenalan in Indonesian, while perkenalan means an introduction. This relationship usually involves recognition and friendly contact without the trust or obligations of close friendship. Introductions often happen through an existing social connection. A shared colleague, relative, neighbor, classmate, or community member can provide context and make a first meeting feel safer. Polite address matters at the beginning. Bapak or Pak for a man, Ibu or Bu for a woman, and Kak for a person treated as a slightly older peer are common, but local usage and personal preference vary. Light questions about origin, work, family, food, or the local area are common ways to begin conversation. Some questions may feel personal to outsiders, yet a person may still answer briefly or redirect the discussion. Names, roles, and group connections can matter more than a formal exchange of contact details. Remembering where someone was met and greeting them later can strengthen the connection. Digital contact is common after an introduction, but receiving a phone number or social-media account does not automatically create closeness. Permission, privacy, and reasonable messaging hours still matter. Small acts of courtesy help an acquaintance relationship grow. A greeting, thank-you message, useful introduction, or appropriate invitation can show reliability without creating heavy obligation. Social warmth should not be confused with unlimited trust. Personal information, money, documents, passwords, and major commitments should be protected until the person and purpose are well understood. Acquaintance customs differ across Indonesia. Local language, adat, religion, age, workplace culture, and urban or rural settings can all affect introductions and expectations.
