Elections in Indonesia

Indonesia holds democratic elections under the Constitution and national law. Eligible citizens vote directly and secretly, and election bodies administer and supervise the process. Pemilu is the common term for national general elections. Voters choose the president and vice president as a pair, members of the DPR, members of provincial and regency or city DPRD councils, and members of the DPD. Pilkada refers to elections for regional heads. These include governors, regents called bupati, and mayors called wali kota, together with their deputies. The General Elections Commission, known as Komisi Pemilihan Umum or KPU, organizes major parts of the election process. The Election Supervisory Body, called Badan Pengawas Pemilihan Umum or Bawaslu, supervises conduct and handles matters within its authority. Political parties play a central role in nominating many candidates and organizing campaigns. DPD candidates follow a different representative path because the DPD is designed to represent regions. Before polling, voters should confirm their registration, learn which contests apply to their area, and compare candidates and parties. Campaign messages are proposals and arguments, not proof that a policy will be delivered. At polling stations, officials check voters, provide ballots, protect ballot secrecy, and count votes according to the official procedure. Witnesses, supervisors, observers, documentation, and formal recapitulation help make the result traceable. Elections give citizens peaceful influence and make leaders answerable to voters. They cannot by themselves guarantee honest government, good services, or equal influence, so public oversight between elections remains important.
