Religion in Indonesia

Religion has a visible place in Indonesian society, but Indonesia is not religiously uniform. The religious landscape differs between islands, provinces, cities, villages, ethnic groups, and families. Most Indonesians are Muslim. Islamic practice includes many organizations, schools, scholarly traditions, devotional customs, and local forms rather than one single social style. Protestant and Catholic communities are important in many regions. Hindu life is especially prominent in Bali and also exists elsewhere, while Buddhist and Confucian communities contribute to the country's religious diversity. Many communities preserve Indigenous beliefs and ritual relationships with ancestors, land, and spiritual beings. The term kepercayaan can refer to traditions of belief outside or alongside widely recognized institutional religions. Pancasila provides a national framework that includes belief in one supreme God and ideals of humanity, unity, deliberation, and justice. Public life often presents religious belonging as compatible with national unity. Religion can shape prayer times, fasting, food, clothing, marriage, burial, schooling, and charitable activity. The importance of each practice depends on the person and community. Major festivals may include worship, family visits, shared meals, travel, gifts, and assistance to others. Dates and practices follow different religious calendars and should be checked locally when planning. Interfaith neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and families are common in many areas. Cooperation is real, but prejudice, unequal power, and conflict can also occur and should not be ignored. Respect begins by asking rather than guessing. A person's name, clothing, ethnicity, or home region does not reliably reveal every belief or practice. Visitors can usually participate in open community events when invited. Sacred spaces require suitable clothing, quiet behavior, permission for photographs, and attention to local instructions.
