Unemployment in Indonesia

Unemployment is commonly called pengangguran in Indonesia. It generally describes a person without work who is available for work and trying to find it. Not everyone without a formal job fits the same situation. Some people study, care for family, stop searching, run tiny informal activities, or work fewer hours than they want. Job loss may follow the end of a contract, dismissal, business closure, restructuring, illness, migration, or seasonal change. The practical effect depends on savings, household support, debt, housing, and access to transport. Indonesia does not rely on one universal cash benefit for every unemployed person. Support may instead come from employment social security, public assistance, training programs, local services, or family and community networks, depending on eligibility. Jaminan Kehilangan Pekerjaan, often shortened to JKP, is associated with protection after qualifying employment loss within the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan system. It should not be assumed to cover every worker or every reason for leaving a job. Kartu Prakerja is widely known as a work-readiness and skills-development program rather than a general replacement wage for all unemployed people. Program availability and conditions should be checked through official channels when applying. Finding work often involves job platforms, school or community contacts, job fairs, direct applications, and personal referrals. Informal income can help during the search, but it may offer limited security. Unemployment can be used for retraining and a more focused search, but it also creates financial and emotional pressure. A written plan helps protect urgent needs while keeping the job search active.
