Employment in Iran

Employment is often described with words such as estekhdam, meaning hiring or employment, and gharardad-e kar, meaning a labor contract. The legal nature of the relationship depends on how the work is actually organized, not only on its label. An employment agreement should identify the worker and employer. It should also explain the duties, workplace, start date, duration, working time, pay, benefits, and conditions for ending the relationship. Employment may be open-ended, fixed-term, or connected to a specific task. A fixed-term arrangement normally ends differently from an ongoing relationship, so the duration must be easy to understand. Workers may receive a basic wage plus job-related allowances or benefits. They should review deductions and keep proof of each payment rather than relying only on spoken explanations. Eligible formal employment is generally linked to social insurance registration and contributions. The worker should check that the recorded employment and contribution history match the real work. Leave, rest time, workplace safety, and protection against harmful treatment are parts of the employment relationship. The exact application can vary with the sector, occupation, and type of workplace. Ending employment can involve resignation, expiry of a fixed term, completion of a task, dismissal, retirement, or agreement between the parties. Written notice and a final account help prevent disputes over unpaid wages, unused rights, or returned property. Public-sector hiring and some regulated occupations may follow separate recruitment or qualification procedures. Foreign workers must also satisfy immigration and work-authorization rules before starting employment.
