Family in Iran

The Persian word khanevadeh means family. In Iran, the idea often reaches beyond the people living in one home and includes a wider circle of relatives. Parents and older relatives may hold respected positions. Their advice can influence education, work, marriage, housing, caregiving, and other major choices, although every household is different. Family contact commonly happens through calls, messages, visits, shared meals, and mehmani, which means a social visit or gathering. Religious festivals, Nowruz, weddings, funerals, and other important events can bring relatives together. Families often exchange practical support. This may include caring for children or older people, helping during illness, sharing knowledge, or assisting a relative who is starting a new stage of life. People may use kinship words warmly even outside their biological family. At the same time, the exact family relationship can matter when discussing duties, authority, inheritance, or marriage. Hospitality is an important part of many family visits. Guests may be offered tea, fruit, sweets, or a meal, and polite offering and refusal can involve taarof. Family closeness can provide safety and belonging. It can also create pressure when relatives expect access to private decisions or agreement with family preferences. There is no single Iranian family model. Urban and rural life, language, ethnic background, religion, income, migration experience, generation, and personal values all shape family practice.
